Artist Statement

Where Things Wander

"Release the reins and let the horse choose," said the expert horsewoman to the novice, the latter being me. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or panic as I sat bareback in an unexpected situation. My companion trusted the horse. I questioned her faith in me. Somewhere between hesitation and trust, trepidation gave way to joyful anticipation as we wandered forward together into the open range, connected, allowing, discovering. A partnership. The horse chose the path. I chose to enjoy the ride. In the truest sense, we wandered unbridled.

These artworks wander as well, different subjects, different mediums, yet all share the same willingness to trust curiosity and allow things to unfold. This exhibition is an invitation to notice the quiet conversations between things. I hope you'll wander within them.

About the Artist

Jill Soukup was born in Buffalo, New York, and raised in Colorado, where she lives and works. A childhood fascination with horses kept her drawing constantly; she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Colorado State University in 1991 and spent eleven years as a graphic designer before committing to painting full time. Her work continues to gain recognition through awards, national publications, and juried and solo exhibitions.
