About the Exhibition

This exhibition is a survey of Ulrich Gleiter’s travels and his first sustained body of paintings created in America. From San Francisco and the Golden Gate to the Rockies and the canyons of the Southwest, Gleiter responds to landscapes encountered for the first time through the eyes of a European painter.

Light is the central subject of these paintings. Working directly from life, Gleiter captures the fleeting atmosphere, color, and changing conditions of each place. Together, the works document both a journey across America and a new chapter in the artist’s painting.

The subjects range from Dead Horse Point and the Utah canyons to the Bitterroot Valley in Montana, a theater front in Chattanooga, and a hotel in Jackson, Montana. What holds them together is the light in each place, observed at a particular hour and painted before it moved on.

About the Artist

Ulrich Gleiter (b. 1977, Saarbrücken, Germany) trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, Moscow’s Surikov Institute, and the Repin Institute in Saint Petersburg, and paints from life in a plein air practice that joins German Expressionist color to the thick paint handling of the Russian academic tradition. He has won multiple Best of Show awards at American plein air competitions, has shown with Gallery 1261 since 2013 (most recently On Site, 2025), and divides his time between Germany and Hamilton, Montana.
